At NOVA Cat Clinic, we often see kitties who are brought in for a visit because something just doesn’t seem right. Most of our blog posts include some version of the phrase “cats are masters at hiding illness.” Often, a subtle change in behavior or your cat’s usual routine may be your only clue that he or she is ill. Here are seven changes you may notice when your cat is sick.
Changes in food or water consumption Is your cat becoming more finicky about food? Are you filling the water bowl more often?
Changes in litter box habits Is your cat urinating more? Defecating less frequently? Eliminating outside the box?
Changes in mobility Have you noticed your cat spending less time upstairs? Is he not jumping on the bed or sofa anymore? Does she seem sore or stiff when she wakes up from a nap?
Changes in activity Is your cat sleeping more? Has she stopped coming to the door to greet you when you get home? Does he seem hyperactive at night?
Changes in socialization Does your cat seem to want more time alone? Has she become more clingy?
Changes in grooming habits Have you noticed hair loss? Matted fur? A coat that appears more dry or more oily?
Change in weight Does you cat seem heavier? Have you noticed that weight loss that the vet recommended, but haven’t changed food or exercise?
Although any of these changes could indicate an illness, a physical exam and discussion with your veterinarian is necessary to determine the best treatment for your cat. Additional tests, including bloodwork, extensive exam with sedation, xrays, ultrasound, or referral to a specialist, may be needed to help us keep your cat feeling well. Please contact us if you have any concerns about your cat’s behavior.
