Reach Out and Read (ROar)

We at NOVA Cat Clinic are very happy to be working with our clients, Joel and Teresa Kaplan with a new charity (to us) Reach Out and Read (ROar).  The Kaplans have provided us with a box for book donations.  We are primarily interested in animal related books, but happy to take any children’s books.  Reading enhances all of our lives and I cannot imagine a better charity to help our local needs.  I am attaching more information from Mrs Kaplan about the program.

Thank you all for your support.

From Mrs. Kaplan:

Reach Out and Read is a nonprofit early literacy program that prepares the youngest disadvantaged children to succeed in school. Since 1989, Reach Out and Read has built upon the special relationship between parents and young children by encouraging parents to read aloud to their children daily. During medical visits, participating pediatricians convey to parents the importance of books and reading in their children’s lives. The child is presented with free book; often this is their first book in their home.

Reach Out and Read families read more together more often, and their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabulary and stronger language skills. They test on average 6 months ahead of their peers. Research shows that being read to early creates a strong support for learning, academic success, and for a more promising and productive future.

Currently my husband, Joel, and I are volunteers, providing donated children’s books to a number of pediatric clinics in Virginia and Washington, D.C., including: Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., and their pediatric clinic in Anacostia which serves some of the city’s neediest children, and the InovaCares Children’s clinic in Falls Church Virginia, which serves children primarily of Spanish heritage.

Reach Out and Read gives children a foundation for learning and a resilience to combat the effects of poverty, but we need your help. We can’t solve every hardship that underserved children face, but book by book we can give them a brighter future.

To donate gently used (or new) children’s books, from infant to teens, or for more information, please contact:

Thank you, Teresa
