Turning Back the Clock

Last month we told you about Ellie’s wonderful acupuncture success story. This month, we’d like to follow up by explaining how Traditional Chinese Medicine can help reduce the discomfort associated with some of the signs of aging.

No matter what species you are, your body will change as it ages. In cats, this can sometimes be difficult to clearly identify. Perhaps your kitty is not sitting on top of the refrigerator as often, or maybe he seems to be sleeping more. The cat crazies grow less frequent and maybe he’s playing with his mouse or laser toy less enthusiastically. Cats are generally masters at hiding signs of aging, one of which may be pain. Traditional Chinese Medicine is one way to help fight some of these signs.

In Traditional Chinese medicine, the Qi (pronounced Chee) is thought of as the flow of function throughout the body. It travels through the body on meridians which are like highways created by acupuncture points. Sometimes these meridians can have traffic jams or blockages, which can block the flow of the Qi. These blockages can cause local pain. Besides pain, there are issues that may arise from not having the Qi flow to the proper areas of the body. A few of the issues include masses, temperature control problems, sores, arthritis, seizures or head aches.

A very common sign of aging which can also cause pain is arthritis. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the organ that controls the bones is the kidney. The kidney also controls the Jing (pronounced like sing with a j sound), which can be loosely translated to mean the essence. Think of the essence as the wood that keeps the fires of life burning. Once the wood is gone and the fire goes out, life is done. Unblocking the meridians to allow the Qi to flow properly not only reduces the pain associated with arthritis, but also helps throw another log onto the fire. Your kitty will feel better and have replenished his Jing. This will enhance his quality of life, allowing him to be able to move and play again. As a result, you will both be happier!
