Writer's picture: NOVA Cat ClinicNOVA Cat Clinic

We have discussed flea and tick prevention in a previous post. That post is still current on effectiveness, safety, and cost. To read more click here.

There is a new player coming on the market soon for cats, Bravecto. This product is an oral product for dogs and has been available for one  year . It kills fleas and tick for up to 3 months with one application.

The cat product will be topical.  It is labeled for fleas and some ticks up to 3 months.  For other ticks only 2 months.

Bravecto will come in three different sizes for cats.

 2.6-6.2lbs (112.5mg)

6.3-13.8lbs (250mg)

and 13.8-27.5lbs (500mg).

Kittens need to be over 6 months of age to use Bravecto.

Tick control can be especially challenging in cats.  Most products that kill ticks are harmful to cats.  Bravecto is in a new class of drugs call isoxazoline-substituted benzamide derivatives. Bravecto inhibitors of the arthropod nervous system. The mode of action of Bravecto is the antagonism of the ligand-gated chloride channels (gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-receptor and glutamate-receptor).

Bravecto is very safe and can be use on pregnant or nursing queens.

Please feel free to ask us questions and see if this product is right for your cat.
