Mosquitoes and Heartworms Are Back

Writer's picture: NOVA Cat ClinicNOVA Cat Clinic

The weather is turning into spring and summer here in the northern United States.  With warm weather come mosquitoes and potentially heartworm disease.

Heartworm disease is a mosquito borne disease.    The disease is easy to prevent and hard to cure.  It only takes one infected mosquito.  As to matter of transmission, heartworm disease is very similar to malaria.

We have written about this before and you may want to reference the blog from last year.  We are updating pricing information and wanted be sure that everyone is aware of the risk as the weather gets warmer.

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Revolution is a topical preventative and cost $0.44 per day or $13.12 per month. Revolution also prevents fleas and deworms. Heartgard is an oral preventative and runs $0.24 per day or $ 7.32 per month.

Heartworm protection is highly recommended for all cats in the Mid-Atlantic. You should discuss this with your veterinarian
