As veterinarians, we use human medications for our feline patients. These drugs are “off-label” which means that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved these drugs for use in cats. The FDA allows us to use medications that are not approved for our species. We use drugs that have been used in veterinary schools and have been widely used for cats. If we only used feline approved drugs, you could count those on both hands.
We try to use generic products and call them into pharmacies. We have noticed that the prices of generic drugs have risen considerably in the last few years. Prescriptions that use to be $20 are now $120.
Since most cats do not have insurance these prices are paid out of pocket.
There are some new web sites and apps that helps consumers get the best price. These will help you compare prices at different pharmacies with the click of a mouse. GoodRx is one site and WeRx is another. Both sites will help you compare drug prices.
Another good site is Blink Health. This site has discounted prices, and they have an app also that can be downloaded on your phone.
Currently veterinarians CANNOT be providers for Blink Health. The company is working to correct that situation and we will let you know as soon as it becomes available to us
We hope this helps you find affordable prescriptions for your cat. Please feel free to ask us for assistance.
