Cats often get a bad rap for not being very loving. They are often accused of being aloof and not being affectionate. Personally, I have found that to be the furthest thing from the truth. My father, who was also a veterinarian, used to say “The best dog is a really great cat”. I could not agree more. Cats are all very different individuals. They have such a huge variety of personalities. Some cats are shy. They hide when they hear the doorbell, or can often be found under the bed. But if you think about it, doesn’t it seem natural for an animal that weighs 10 pounds to run and hide in fear when a creature 10 times their size approaches them? Given time and work these kinds of cats will slowly begin to trust. I always feel such a sense of accomplishment when these cats begin to come out of their shells a bit. Then there is the outgoing and gregarious type. Their plan is to make everyone love them. They greet you at the front door and they always want to be the center of attention. This is a pretty good strategy, because why would you hurt someone you love so much? My old cat Cosmo thought everyone loved him and was always rubbing and licking everyone. There are also all the cats in between. Getting to know your cat’s individual personality is one of the most rewarding things about having a cat. A friend once told me that having a dog is like having a permanent toddler. Cats are more like teenagers. They need you, but only for specific things and not all the time. Cats are such wonderful companions. They view us as equals and when they show love it is not an act of subordination. The following video shows what cats are really like. A disclaimer is that yarn is not the best toy for a cat.Enjoy the video and let us know what you think.
